For many low-income women in Karail Slum, sewing and tailoring provide an important source of household income. The devastating fire destroyed homes, personal belongings, working materials, and small home-based businesses. Women who depended on sewing activities suddenly lost essential equipment and faced uncertainty about how to restart their livelihoods.
Recognizing that emergency relief alone cannot ensure long-term recovery, Youth Prochesta Foundation introduced a livelihood rehabilitation initiative for women affected by the disaster. The Foundation distributed six manual stitching machines to six women who had experienced economic losses because of the fire. The recipients were between 18 and 45 years old.
The distribution aimed to help these women restart or rebuild their tailoring activities from home. Access to a sewing machine can create opportunities to undertake clothing repairs, tailoring orders, and other income-generating work. It can also reduce dependence on temporary assistance and support women in contributing to their household expenses.
The initiative reflects Prochesta Foundation’s understanding that disaster recovery must address both immediate humanitarian needs and the economic challenges that continue after an emergency. By supporting women with practical livelihood tools, the Foundation sought to create opportunities for self-reliance and greater financial stability.
The six machines represent more than material assistance; they are a practical investment in women’s economic participation and recovery. The initiative also recognizes women as important contributors to household resilience and community development.
Prochesta Foundation remains committed to promoting inclusive recovery opportunities for people whose livelihoods are disrupted by disasters. This intervention contributes to SDG 5: Gender Equality, by supporting women’s economic empowerment, and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by encouraging income-generating activities and livelihood restoration.
